Certain members of the Northern Bootcamp team are all too familiar with perimenopause, the time of a woman’s life leading up to menopause where hormones become imbalanced and we deal with symptoms like lack of energy, trouble sleeping and irritability… to name a few.
The good news is that exercise has loads of benefits for women going through pre-menopause or menopause, and our fitness boot camps are widely popular with this demographic!
What is perimenopause?
Women in their 40s go through a transition before menopause where their body undergoes hormonal changes that can have a negative impact on both physical and mental health, called perimenopause.
Did you know that menopause ‘officially’ begins one year after your last cycle? We don’t want to be the bearers of bad news, but you could go through hormonal changes in pre-menopause for months or even years before reaching menopause. There are plenty of ways to combat the symptoms, thankfully, and if it makes you feel any better, there is new research into MANopause, indicating that men also go through a similar struggle.
How can you treat the symptoms of perimenopause?
Finding ways to boost your mood, get better sleep, and keep your fitness in check can significantly reduce the severity of perimenopausal symptoms. Here are some of the benefits of joining a fitness bootcamp during this period of your life:
Weight loss
Hormone changes make it more difficult to keep fit, and during this phase of life, we are more prone to gaining tummy fat, losing muscle mass and weight gain. Therefore, a 1, 4, or 7 day boot camp can be the motivation you need to get your fitness back on track and to find a new balance for establishing the right exercise routine for your changing body!
We tailor our sessions on camp to provide an exercise programme that will be most beneficial for each participant and take into account your current fitness level and goals. Cardio, strength training, and aerobic exercises are key for women at this stage of their life as it can help improve bone health and boost your metabolism, so we will adapt our bootcamp to ensure you get the right benefits from your efforts. The delicious AND nutritious food you will be served will also help with weight loss and we can advise on the right diet to suit your needs and goals.
Being in a group setting with likeminded individuals who are motivated to getting fit and improving their wellbeing means that you will also feel supported and inspired on your weight loss journey!
Taking control of your sleep
Difficulty sleeping is one of the most common – and frustrating – effects of hormonal changes that occur before and during menopause. A wellness retreat where you can get plenty of exercise and then relax in the hot tub or sauna and fall into a luxury bed at the end of the day sounds like a recipe for good sleep, right? Being on a bootcamp also gives you a chance to detox – both physically and emotionally – and the fresh air and calming landscape of Northumberland is the perfect backdrop for a day full of activity and a great night’s sleep.
Improved mental health
Taking a break from reality and focusing on goals is many of our camper’s favourite aspects about being on bootcamp.
Gain serotonin from an exhilarating workout, leave your phone behind on a hike or bike ride with stunning views, try a new adventure like surfing and then jump in the hot tub, all while meeting inspirational friends who are on a mission to reset their life, too, and your wellbeing and mental health will improve drastically.
We are here to help support you in whatever your weight loss or fitness goals are and will tailor your boot camp to ensure you get the best possible results from your wellness holiday. Learn more about our fitness bootcamps in Northumberland or abroad or get in touch to discuss a private bootcamp!
